To whoever finds this,
Twenty years ago, the most the world had to worry about was the upcoming pandemic. That swept through cities, states and countries wiping them through chaotic principles and turning the world into disorganized turmoil. Even the biggest powers of the world succumbed to this sickness that continued to evolve and dissolve the protection humanity knew. And although the sickness just evolved, humans did not give in. They never for a moment gave up, they innovated new solutions. Yet, look at humanity now, not a single sight of human life lives on Earth.
In the past twenty years, pollution overgrown human capabilities and their solution was to move. The earth was too far gone for them to try. With all their great science, even pollution and global warming was beyond their control and technological advances. I was left here, like all forgotten materials, androids with the mind chip of humans are useless to humanity. We are only a copy of the original and if the original is dead, how much of a chance we are really important.
The person which occupied this personality and memories lived upon these islands, integrating their very soul into this place. It was once rich with green, and culturally diverse immersion of people. The roads were a little messed up, but worked fine for the people. The ocean encased these islands but it was oh so blue, many came to visit just to see the shimmer and glimmer of the sun off the surface of the water.
And yet, twenty years later it was a desolate empty ghost town of the past. Water over the course of time had gone from being a commodity to a luxury. Even though the ocean had mostly dried up, the magma from the earth’s core had spewed upon the surface creating an isolated, dry and dangerous climate.
Androids thrive in this new world, new future as our energy batteries are charged by the sun and heat sources. Even though we were left behind, we roam the areas where humanity once thrived, in a world of business of our own. Alone.
But some parts of my memory or well her memories, entrance a curiosity I was never programmed to be able to do. One of the memories, she’s walking on a beach, her hand intertwined with another person. She holds a small child in her arms while her feet sink into the sand, the water washes over the small particles. She smiles brightly while the sun sets in front of the three of them.
I remember what she looked like, I have her memories. But I am not this girl, not this woman. I am just her copy, so her happiest memories are my favorite memories of the life I live. I close my eyes while the memories play in the background as the image of the sunset fades.
“J-January, t-twenty-f-fourth…errrr…t-twenty-f-forty….115…..lived”
The End.
In my sole opinion, I honestly was not sure what I thought the future would look like. However, I have had similar prompts to explain this, I took two short story ideas I had previously and combined the world building ideas I had. I think that the pollution of humanities waste will catch up faster than technology can keep up. In the short story or vignette, I addressed this idea by comparing how it was twenty years earlier before Earth became uninhabitable for humans. Comparing the tenacity of humanity to that of how they chose to run away over fighting or fixing their mistakes. While including an idea of how some tech has survived longer than humans. With both their source of energy being heat and solar, while the earth is internally heating itself up from within.
